On the Shelf

She thought she was a princess, sitting on a shelf.
She didn't need the shallow whims of childhood, the schoolgirl crushes or the hardships of life.

She was above it all, above it all on her shelf.
Like a china doll to be seen and never touched;
until the fear of being broken is overwhelmed by the desire to be held.

One day she will let herself down and expose her fragile heart,
hoping if it breaks it can be repaired, only to return to her shelf of solitude.
