Like sands through the hour glass.... just kidding! By popular demand, here's more that I've written of Sail Away. I don't know if I'll stick to that title or not. Also I am continuously editing it, so if it shows up in print, it will be better. Love to all my fans! LOL! No really. Ha ha. ~D

Rutherford High was playing their biggest rival, Livington. Everyone at school was hyped for the big game. Heading to the gym, Jason saw a couple of boys horsing around in the hall. He thought a teacher would probably be along soon to calm them down. The gym was packed! Everyone was shoulder to shoulder. Jason thought to himself that if one of these kids fell it would trigger the domino effect. The band was in full glory. The cheerleaders were ever spirited. And even a few of the known potheads were there. This was the pep rally of the year. Forget about homecoming, if they won tonight, victory would be sweet. Right in the middle of the excitement, the kid in front of him stumbled back. This in turn caused Jason to flail backwards. He caught some guy’s arm and a small riot erupted. By the time it was all said and done Jason was being taken away in handcuffs.
Sally and Bob Walker thought the police must’ve been crazy to take their grandson to jail. Jason was a good boy, despite his problems with his mother. Kayla sporadically popped in and out of Jason’s life, and when she did, it always left lasting scars. Jason dealt with the disappointment rather well. Now with their grandson in jail, they hired the best lawyer they could afford.
Roberta Davis had a good standing in the law community. She had won her fair share of small criminal cases. This one was to be no exception. Her client, Jason Walker was a 15 year old boy accused of stabbing a classmate at a school pep rally. The prosecution’s whole case was full of holes. There was no weapon, no motive, and the only witnesses’ stories had changed twice. The witnesses, two friends’ of the victim, had said Jason cut Brad accidentally. Then, turned around the next day and said Jason had stabbed Brad in a fight. The rumors were flying around Rutherford. The principal had of course, expelled Jason. He wouldn’t be returning to Rutherford anytime soon. Bertie had to find some way to get Jason into school, just as soon as she got him out of jail.

Sail Away Continued
April 1991
Kayla was an over achiever. She made all A's and was a popular girl. She can still remember when she met Kevin. Kevin was older than her, and it made her feel special that a man of 21 noticed a girl her age. She met him at a club on teen night. He was the bouncer there. She was teasing him about having to use his big muscles to throw some kid out. He snapped back that he was more than just big muscles. Kayla was smitten. Not many boys at school talked to her, much less flirted. Over the next few weeks Kayla was swept up in a whirlwind of emotion. She was in love with Kevin. So much that she was blind to the fact that Kevin was not a very nice person. Before she met him she was a virgin. Now, he taught her things that her mother didn't even know. It was 5 months into their relationship that Kayla noticed something was wrong. Kevin didn't seem to be as attentive to her feelings. What would she do without him? And to top it off she was late. No, not for school either.
Her fears were confirmed a month later when the EPT she took turned blue. Great, just what she needed! Kevin was none too pleased either. He spent even more time out late, and drank a lot. Kayla's grades slipped and she felt as if her life was over. Her parents were shocked that their precious little girl was pregnant. If they only knew the whole story.
Jason was born in July 1992. This was the turning point in Kayla's life. She couldn't handle the responsibility. After she graduated, she left. Jason was better off with her parents anyway. Kevin had been long gone for some time now and during that time he had been in and out of jail several times. He signed over his parental rights for Jason. Kayla went as far away from the country town she grew up in as she could get. It really wasn't far enough as far as she was concerned.
Jason's grandparent's gave him the most normal childhood as they could. When he was in fourth grade they moved him to a bigger school so he would have a better learning experience. Rutherford ISD had an exemplary learning program and excellent extra-curricular activities. Jason fit in perfectly.

Sail Away
He sat, looking at the stark white walls. For two days now, he wondered how he ended up in this cell. They said he had a knife. They said he cut some kid at the pep rally. Jason never carried a knife. Why were they doing this to him? He used to be known as a happy-go-lucky kid who had lots of friends. Where are his friends now? He could never go back to that school, even if they let him and he wanted to. They would just find something else to fault him for and throw him out. He didn't know what he did to deserve this punishment. He didn't think he had any enemies. But he was wrong.
How's that for a story beginning? Leave me comments and let me know!

Gleaning for inspiration
My mother found for me the newsletter that Great Grandfather used to write. Entitled "Of Cabbages and Kings," it was a small church newsletter that he put out anonomously as "The Walrus." Hence, the title of my online journal. When he began, the third line of the title was incomplete. It read " 'The time has come,' the Walrus said, 'to talk of many things of ?? and ?? and ?? of cabbages and kings." Thanks to three somewhat younger parishoners, the next time the letter went out, it was corrected. He was dissappointed about not recieving any mail from the first letter, but rather than get discouraged, he just remarked "no noose is good noose!"
He also gleaned for inspiration, here is an example:
As a symbol of our modern age(this was the 60's):
A staid old gentleman, judge at a horse show was upset by the dress of some of the young girls. He remarked, "Just look at that young person with the poodle cut, a cigarette, and tight blue jeans," he commented to a bystander. "Is that a boy or a girl?"
"It's a girl! It's my daughter!" the bystander replied.
"Oh I'm sorry sir, for give me. I didn't realize you were her father."
"I'm not! " snapped the person, "I'm her Mother!"
He also went on to comment on Ed Sullivan and the Beatles. My how times have changed!
More next time.
Love you much, Me
P.s. I am just the Walrus, you don't have to listen to me. But if "The Carpenter" speaks to you, you might want to pay attention!
