April 1991
Kayla was an over achiever. She made all A's and was a popular girl. She can still remember when she met Kevin. Kevin was older than her, and it made her feel special that a man of 21 noticed a girl her age. She met him at a club on teen night. He was the bouncer there. She was teasing him about having to use his big muscles to throw some kid out. He snapped back that he was more than just big muscles. Kayla was smitten. Not many boys at school talked to her, much less flirted. Over the next few weeks Kayla was swept up in a whirlwind of emotion. She was in love with Kevin. So much that she was blind to the fact that Kevin was not a very nice person. Before she met him she was a virgin. Now, he taught her things that her mother didn't even know. It was 5 months into their relationship that Kayla noticed something was wrong. Kevin didn't seem to be as attentive to her feelings. What would she do without him? And to top it off she was late. No, not for school either.
Her fears were confirmed a month later when the EPT she took turned blue. Great, just what she needed! Kevin was none too pleased either. He spent even more time out late, and drank a lot. Kayla's grades slipped and she felt as if her life was over. Her parents were shocked that their precious little girl was pregnant. If they only knew the whole story.
Jason was born in July 1992. This was the turning point in Kayla's life. She couldn't handle the responsibility. After she graduated, she left. Jason was better off with her parents anyway. Kevin had been long gone for some time now and during that time he had been in and out of jail several times. He signed over his parental rights for Jason. Kayla went as far away from the country town she grew up in as she could get. It really wasn't far enough as far as she was concerned.
Jason's grandparent's gave him the most normal childhood as they could. When he was in fourth grade they moved him to a bigger school so he would have a better learning experience. Rutherford ISD had an exemplary learning program and excellent extra-curricular activities. Jason fit in perfectly.
